Common calculator errors and how to fix them

A calculator error can often be traced to input syntax, the domain of a function, or a mode setting. Use this checklist to find the cause.

Missing parentheses

Functions such as sin, cos, sqrt, log, and ln need an argument in parentheses in this calculator. For example, enter sqrt(25), not sqrt 25. Make sure every opening parenthesis has a matching closing parenthesis.

Implicit multiplication

For clarity, use an explicit multiplication symbol between values and variables, such as 2*x or 3*pi. The parser supports common implicit multiplication in many cases, but explicit symbols reduce ambiguity.

Division by zero

A denominator of zero makes an expression undefined. Check the entire denominator, especially when it contains a variable or a grouped expression.

Domain restrictions

Square roots of negative real numbers and logarithms of zero or negative numbers are not real-valued in the supported real-number mode. If the result is undefined, check the input domain and whether a complex-number tool is required.

Angle mode mismatch

Trigonometric results depend on whether the input angle is interpreted in degrees or radians. Confirm the mode before comparing the result with a textbook or assignment.

Unsupported syntax

This tool is not a full symbolic algebra system. Advanced commands, matrix syntax, list operations, and many TI-specific expressions are not supported. Try a simpler expression or use a dedicated advanced math tool when needed.
